Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease that impacts the foundation of teeth: your gums, bone, and connecting tissues. This condition occurs when untreated gingivitis, a less severe gum ailment, advances and causes the gums to withdraw from the teeth, leading to the development of infected pockets. Over time, the infection extends beneath the gumline, leading to the deterioration of bone and connecting tissues that anchor your teeth. This, if unaddressed, may culminate in tooth loss and other severe oral health complications. 

Typical indications of periodontitis encompass inflamed, tender, and reddened gums, persistent foul breath, receding gums, tooth mobility, and modifications in the alignment of teeth during biting. Given that periodontitis is a critical condition, early identification and immediate treatment are paramount to stop or prevent additional harm, including losing teeth and expensive restorative procedures. A dentist or periodontist can diagnose and administer appropriate remedies, which may include deep cleaning through scaling and root planing, antibiotic therapy, and for advanced scenarios, surgical interventions to restore damaged gum and bone tissues.
